Essential oils:

Safety and how to utilize

What are they?

They are oils (also known as aromatherapy) derived from plants.

They can be utilized for anxiety, sleep, nausea, skin irritations, inflammation, muscle pain, cleaning and more. they can be defused by putting them in an electric essential oil diffuser or one that utilizes a candle (usually a ceramic device). by breathing in these oils, you can receive the many benefits of essential oils. Depending on the specific oil, they can help you sleep, reduce anxiety, clean the air, deter bugs, help with unwanted smells, and even reduce pain and inflammation.

Essential oils can be worn on the wrists, temples, and bottoms of feet. These are the most efficient places for them as they are well absorbed in these specific areas. They are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream on the bottoms of the feet.

With essential oils being highly concentrated, diluting them is advised. You can utilize a carrier oil such as grapeseed, avocado, coconut or almond oil. A few drops of essential oil with carrier oil of your choice. You can then apply them to your skin safely. Avoid contact with eyes and other sensitive areas while oils are on your hands as they can cause irritation.

Some of the more common essential oils you can find at most health food stores, online and other grocery stores are Lavender, peppermint, rosemary, Teatree and eucalyptus.

Lavender: Known for being relaxing. It can calm an overactive mind, aid in sleep, and help you relax. It has been utilized for skin irritations, pimples, and burns. Dabbing the oil on a pimple can help reduce irritation and speed up healing. The essential oil is also great for headaches. A few drops with a carrier oil rubbed onto temples can be very useful. Also great for muscle tension. Several drops in a carrier oil rubbed onto muscles can help reduce inflammation and pain. It is considered to be more cooling. Safe for little ones and pregnant women. A few drops should work just fine when utilizing topically. A few drops in your hands, inhaled (not too close to the nose) is useful when experiencing anxiety and stress.

Lavender oil also makes a great cleaner. Add several drops to a spray bottle with water and utilize to clean counters, disinfect, or de-odorize a room or clothes.

Peppermint: Very cooling and numbing. You can inhale (wafting is safest, not to overwhelm your system) a few drops in your hands to help you feel a bit more alert when feeling sleepy or down. Peppermint essential oil can help reduce nausea either by simply smelling the oil or putting a few drops, diluted onto your belly.

For muscle pain, a few drops of diluted peppermint oil rubbed onto sore areas can help reduce inflammation. Its cooling and numbing effects is what makes it so effective for pain in the body. For headaches, rub a drop or two of the diluted oil onto the forehead and temples. This can reduce a migraine. Be careful not to touch the eyes as it can cause irritation.

Peppermint oil has a bit of a delayed effect. Start with a few drops and wait a few minutes to experience the numbing and cooling effect. You can always add a few more drops if you don't feel it. Just remember the more you put, the more intense its effects will be, causing one to feel very cold.

On a hot day, peppermints cooling effects can come in handy, helping you feel a bit cooler. Try out a few drops on the back of the neck, or bottoms of feet to give your body a cooling sensation. Safe for pregnant women and kids. Be careful when utilizing essential oils on kids. Go light with them as they are going to be a bit stronger for little ones.

Eucalyptus: A warming oil. This essential oil is very beneficial for the sinuses. If your nose is clogged up, you can inhale some of the oil to open up the nose and help you better breath. you can also rub a few drops of the diluted oil onto your chest or put in an essential oil diffuser. This will help open up the lungs. Eucalyptus essential oil has been utilized for muscles. A few drops(diluted) rubbed onto sore muscles can aid in pain relief. Eucalyptus oil has been utilized on dogs to get rid of fleas. You can either add a few drops to their shampoo/wash or dilute with a bit of water and put onto the backs of their necks, so they do not lick it off.

Rosemary: A warming oil. Aids in memory. When doing a task or trying to remember something, you can inhale some of the oil so that next time you inhale the oil it triggers your memory. Rosemary essential oil is great for the muscles. A few drops(diluted) rubbed onto sore areas can aid in pain relief. It boosts circulation and is anti-inflammatory.

Rosemary essential oil is deodorizing. Several drops in a spray bottle with water can be utilized as a room spray, on laundry and more. It's refreshing, uplifting scent can help boost one's mood when feeling sluggish. You can inhale a few drops or put some diluted on your wrists.

Tea tree: This oil is very potent with a strong, distinctive smell. It's antifungal, antibacterial properties make it great for cleaning. A few drops in a spray bottle with water can be utilized for cleaning counters, toilets, even mold. Same as the spray bottle with tea tree and water, add some white vinegar and spray on mold. it has been shown to get rid of mold quite well, keeping it at bay.  On its own it can be verry drying. Make sure to dilute with a carrier oil before utilizing topically. Teatree can be utilized on minor wounds, rashes and the scalp for dandruff. On pimples, dab a drop of the diluted oil onto a pimple to help dry it out and speed up healing.

When purchasing essential oils, try opting for organic, therapeutic grade on the label. One of my favorite brands is "Aura Cacia", commonly found at most health food stores. Another great go to is "Pranarom". "Aura Cacia" is the more affordable option of the two. You can find many other great brands online and in stores.
